Mark Tobey was a strong personal and artistic influence on Arthur Hall Smith. Smith studied with Tobey in Seattle, Washington after returning from the Korean War in 1955.

When describing his mentor in 1959, Smith said that he admired Tobey as an "American artist presenting a uniquely fresh vision to world art while never sacrificing structure to invention."
